Lot 1814
1851-O $1 Gold Liberty. NGC graded MS-62. A scarce coin in this grade, this one boasts luster in the fields, but the strike is a bit weak on the upper curls of Liberty, but the surrounding stars are full. Worth a close look by the date collector.

Lot 1827
1857 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. This coin just needs some time to haze up a touch, outside the tomb, for it's only some faint lines on the obverse which are keeping this from a "65." A bit of striking softness shows on the upper left wreath, but overall the impression is good. Clashed dies show on reverse field. The color is a mellow gold.

Lot 1828
1858-S $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded AU-55. Some small marks, a short gouge through the base of the 1 above DOLLAR, and a pin scratch on the right obverse field, but all in all quite a presentable example of this San Francisco rarity.

Lot 1829
1863 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-61. Rare date, with a mintage of just 6,200 business strikes. Not many of them have survived--it was the middle of the Civil War, you will recall. No reason this coin isn't in a 62 holder. It is very clean, sharply struck for issue, and has good color. A planchet flaw can be located to the bottom left of the 1 over DOLLAR.

Lot 1830
1868 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded MS-61. Low mintage, of course, with just 10,500 cranked out during Reconstruction. But war profiteers were by then collecting coins, so some got saved, liked this nice coin. It has the luster of a date from the 1880s, real strong, and almost no contact marks, aside from a few longish ones right behind the princess's head. A nice coin for the grade, worth a good bid!

Lot 1834
1883 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. A lovely coin with choice color and resplendent surfaces. Mint-fresh luster in the fields dances when examined under a light. Decently struck, with the lettering, wreath and date crisp and complete. Scarce as a date, and seldom found much better.

Lot 1836
1886 $1 Gold Indian. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. A gleaming and lovely coin having slight cameo contrast and delicate orange-peel surfaces, showing nary a hairline. A few tiny patches attest to dies not fully polished, as often found on these dollars. Very desirable.

Lot 1837
1887 $1 Gold Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. A very choice coin that just misses full gem status. The fields are prooflike as the dies were prepared with polish which still remained when this coin was struck. Full and complete devices, with round curls on Liberty and precise definition on the wreath and date. An outstanding coin in every regard.
From Superior Stamp & Coin Co., Inc.'s "The California Collection" October 3-4, 1978, lot 1448.
